From flat lay to model: preparing a garment reference

Written by OBITREND Editorial Team

A useful fashion image workflow starts before you open an AI tool. The garment photograph is the visual source that communicates the product's actual design. If the reference is unclear, the generated result may fill in missing information with assumptions. A thoughtful preparation process can reduce those ambiguities.

Start by photographing the garment from a clear, straightforward angle. Lay it flat without stretching the fabric or hiding its edges. Smooth major folds where practical, but do not iron away texture that is part of the material. Keep sleeves, hems, collars and closures visible. A neutral background helps the garment stand apart from its surroundings.

Lighting should reveal rather than disguise. Soft, even daylight often makes it easier to judge colour and texture than a strong direct flash. Avoid coloured lighting that changes the apparent shade. If a garment has a back detail, print placement or unusual construction, take additional reference photographs where the tool supports them.

When writing a prompt, separate garment facts from creative direction. Garment facts include colour, silhouette, neckline, sleeve shape, seam placement, buttons, prints and fabric appearance. Creative direction includes model pose, camera framing, background and mood. Explicitly state which details must remain unchanged.

After generation, compare the result with the source. Look closely at colour, pattern scale, pocket placement, seams and proportions. AI imagery is not a substitute for a product inspection. If an output changes the garment, do not publish it as an exact representation of the item.

For designers and sellers, this review is especially important because shoppers rely on accurate product presentation. Use AI images as additional campaign material only when they faithfully represent the product and are clearly distinguished from documentary product photographs where needed.
